When it comes to space, their other restaurant, the Tackle Box beach concession in Corona del Mar, definitely lived up to its name. But now brothers Brian and Andrew Huskey have room to move and groove at a second Tackle Box location at SoCo in Costa Mesa that’s just about 1,990 square feet.

“I feel like this is a bigger platform for us to learn,” said Andrew Huskey co-owner of the new venture with his brother Brian, a “Top Chef” contender in 2013. “The last three years have prepared us for this,” Andrew Huskey said. “We opened the Tackle Box the same way, as a pop-up style restaurant. Brian had one thing on the menu, then two and kept adding.”

OC Register: Taco Mario on the list of 12 best, unforgettable foods in 2017

In an instant the warm atole, served with a pig-shaped gingerbread cookie –an homage to a panaderia treat–transported me back to San Antonio. When-o-when will Taco Maria start serving more substantial desserts? tacomaria.com –Anne Valdespino

When Mark Anderson created his farmers markets, he used his viewpoint as a tomato farmer in Ventura County. He wanted to create a place to benefit local growers and engage patrons. In 2010, the Costa Mesa market was started to add to the chic, hipster landscape at SOCO. The market, which operates from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, is one of six managed by Anderson in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

Anderson wanted to create a community hub.

OC Register: These are the 20 best full-service Mexican restaurants in Orange County

Here’s something I think we can all agree on: Orange County has better Mexican food than anywhere else in California. And I firmly believe we have in Taco Maria the single best Mexican restaurant in the United States, and the chef who tilts the scales heavily in our favor. But we also have some of the best old-fashioned, family-operated California-style Mexican restaurants in the state.

OC Register: The Taste: Consider the Lobster Bisque

We are standing in the bustling kitchen breezeway that connects Restaurant Marin to its older sister, ARC, both of which anchor the burgeoning food mecca at SOCO in Costa Mesa. We face an imposing black door with a glossy high-tech keypad to the left. It’s an oddly tentative, interstitial space – think of it as a brief Tibetan Buddhist bardo, a space one inhabits after death before being transported to nirvana.

Six years after changing the way Orange County thinks of coffee, the flagship Portola Coffee Roasters in Costa Mesa has reopened its famed oval coffee bar after a seven-week remodel.
