Storytime at Cilek Kids Room

Stop by Cilek Kids Room all summer long for Storytime!  This hour-long creative and interactive program will feature live music, dance, and storytelling at each event along with a parent and child art activity to end the day.

Call for Artists at SOCO + The OC Mix

Artist Eligibility:

This call will be open to all qualified artists.  Professional artists, hobbyists, and students may apply; however, to be considered for this project, artists must demonstrate experience completing projects of similar scope.

 

Application Materials:

  • Artist Resume
  • Letter of Interest: This gives artists an opportunity to introduce themselves + describe why they are interested in the project, their approach to creating public art, & any past relevant experience.
  • Visual Support Materials (5 images min.): This gives artists the opportunity to show examples of past relevant work. Acceptable materials include print or digital versions of work samples.  If the artist chooses to submit printed materials, they must scan or convert into a single PDF file & send via email.

Selection Criteria:

  • Artistic excellence, as evidenced by past work (30%)
  • Demonstrated experience working on projects of similar scope (30%)
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to engaging the community in public art projects (30%)
  • Ownership/Management Preference (10%)

 

Selection Process:

The SOCO + the OC Mix teams will collectively decide on the murals that aesthetically look best & highlight the character of the center in the best way.  Submissions received by the deadline will then be reviewed, and those applicants who are identified as most qualified for the project will be notified.  Selected finalists will then be given a theme/creative direction and asked to submit custom designs/proposals by a specific deadline (8/18/19) before the final muralist is chosen.  Submissions will be kept for future mural opportunities.

 

Mural Details:

  • Artist will be responsible for the design, fabrication, delivery and installation of the artwork within the given timeframe, including using appropriate materials.
  • Mural Dimensions: Interior wall 8′ tall x 10’4″ wide (approximate)
  • Wall Construction/Materials: TBD

RED DOT AUCTION VIII CALL FOR ARTISTS!

Dear Artists and Friends of the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity,
Preparations are underway for the Eighth Annual Red Dot Auction benefiting the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity, scheduled for Friday, May 11, 2018.
Today we’re writing to ask you to donate a work of art to this year’s Red Dot Auction.  We’re changing up the overall theme from the Life & Times of Chuck Jones to his Golden Age Decade, the 1950s. Any of the over 90 cartoons Chuck Jones directed during the years 1950 – 1959 are fodder for your imagination. A list of the cartoons is available by clicking here.
There will be five categories this year:
  1. Landscape – predominant theme in landscape, seascape, urban-scape; may include cartoon character(s)
  2. Portrait – may be a self-portrait or the portrait of another person or cartoon character
  3. Homage – to an art genre, specific artist, or live action film
  4. Assemblage – collage using unconventional materials-take something and make something new out of it or its parts
  5. 3D – we’ll provide an 8″ 3D “Cre8ive Peeple” (see below) to be painted and enhanced as you envision

There are only 30 spaces available in each of the five different sections, all requests for a specific section will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

The canvas provided for the first four sections will be a 12″ square and as last year, we ask that you sign the artwork on the reverse.  For the 3D object, please sign the bottom of the object. HOWEVER,  

new this year

 , you may choose to work inany size canvas or other substrate you’d like to provide yourself.

You may prefer to work on paper or another substrate and that’s fine, as long as we can mount it to the 12″ square canvas for presentation the night of the event. The artwork should be signed on the reverse so that bidders at this silent auction will not know who has created which work of art.

Canvases are due back no later than Monday, March 27, 2018! Again this year we will bring the Red Dot Auction online for pre-bidding only. This online auction will go live mid-April 2018 and end the evening of Tuesday, May 8, 2018 In order to be included in it, your artwork must arrive no later than March 27, 2018.
And again this year a commemorative poster, similar to the one shown, will be printed; 30 canvases will be selected to represent this year’s Red Dot Auction. Two of the posters will be produced and sold the evening of the event. To be considered for inclusion in the commemorative poster, your artwork must arrive no later than March 15, 2018.

Chuck Jones Gallery at SOCO and The OC Mix

This second, smaller location in The OC Mix (now open) will focus on finding the art people love to collect and helping them place it in their homes and offices. Wellness Wednesday (starting tomorrow!) at SOCO
Join us for Wellness Wednesdays the second Wednesday of the month at SOCO and The OC Mix. Starting tomorrow, July 12 from 5pm-9pm take some time for yourself with the following:

  • Check in at the Yarnover Truck (outside of The OC Mix by Shuck) starting at 5pm
  • Get a complimentary cocktail card for Greenleaf Gourmet Chopshop
  • Take a hour long yoga class and tarot card reading from the ladies of Fortune and Flow at 6pm 
  • Enjoy tastings at We Olive Wine Bar and The Cheese Shop

Designer Camp OC at SOCO! 
OC Designer Camp 101 is taking place for the first time at SOCO from July 24 – 28 / 9am – 3pm. Your teen can explore the vast careers in the design industry by implementing the principles and elements of design. Students explore the design world covering Art, Branding, Fashion, Interior Design, Photography, Styling, Trend Forecasting and much more. Storytime at Chuck Jones Center for Creativity at SOCO – July 24
