OC Register: Taco Maria’s Chef Carlos Salgado Singled Best Chef: West

Two Orange County restaurants and one chef were recognized as semifinalists in the prestigious James Beard Awards honoring industry professionals, the Beard Foundation announced Wednesday.

 Studio at the Montage Resort in Laguna Beach will compete in the outstanding wine program category and Marche Moderne will be a contender in the outstanding service race. (Marche is currently closed as it is relocating from Costa Mesa to Newport Beach. It is scheduled to reopen this spring.)

OC Register: Nest Bedding opens at SOCO in Costa Mesa

Nest Bedding is open at South Coast Collection in Costa Mesa, its first Orange County location.

The family-owned bedding company specializes in certified organic and natural bedding and mattresses. All of its mattresses and bedding are made in the U.S.

Prices range from $799 to $3,999 for mattresses and $109 to $159 for organic sheets and pillows.

The company has seven locations and will soon add an additional location in Chicago.

SOCO is at 3303 Hyland Ave. The retail destination includes Rochie Bobois and La Z Boy.

OC Register: Best Thing I Ate This Week: Restaurant Marin fries!

When I reviewed Restaurant Marin in May, one of the things I liked most about this all-day gourmet diner was its no-tipping policy. But shortly after that review, it surrendered that idea and switched to the more familiar pricing strategy, which means lower prices for everything (even though it’s actually a wash if you’re a decent tipper).

And they’ve also just revamped the menu, adding all sorts of new items, including chili cheese fries.

I’m sitting on the patio enjoying my morning cup of coffee, watching a butterfly stumble through the jasmine-scented breeze, admiring the crystal chandeliers overhead. Gotan Project, a French band, plays softly on the stereo. The singing is in French, so I can’t understand a word of it, but it’s a soothing rhythm that makes me smile. It puts me in a vacation sort of mood.

“What’s a ‘Bunni breakfast?’” I ask the waitress, who also happens to be one of the owners.
