Portola’s Jeff Duggan on Imbibe’s 75 People to Watch List

When his first son was born with a heart defect that required multiple surgeries and constant care, Duggan and his wife, Christa, found their lives turned upside down. Duggan started the coffee business that would eventually free him from his tech job’s long hours, and Christa left her career to care for their son and help the business grow. With a small commercial roaster, Duggan found a bakery that let him set up shop, and in 2009 he opened Portola Coffee Roasters. Two years later, his passion for coffee—paired with his frustration at having anything less than complete control over the final brewed cup—led to the opening of the flagship café, Portola Coffee Lab, in Costa Mesa. “We were aiming for something scientific, modern and energetic,” says Duggan. “We’re very process-based. Everything we do is for a reason, and we’re never fully satisfied because we know there is always more to discover.”

Jeff and Christa Duggan are passionate about coffee — almost to the point of obsession.

That deep enthusiasm about the intricacies among coffee beans is what drove the husband and wife to open Portola Coffee Lab, which has taken root as a favorite among Orange County coffee drinkers who prefer an alternative to mass-produced java.

Portola, along with other Orange County businesses, will be featured Nov. 25 at Small Business Saturday at SOCO and the OC Mix.

OC Register: Portola Coffee’s next phase: a remodeled flagship store and doughnuts

Six years after changing the way Orange County thinks of coffee, the flagship Portola Coffee Roasters in Costa Mesa has reopened its famed oval coffee bar after a seven-week remodel.

Another favorable mention for our tenant!

I’m sitting on the patio enjoying my morning cup of coffee, watching a butterfly stumble through the jasmine-scented breeze, admiring the crystal chandeliers overhead. Gotan Project, a French band, plays softly on the stereo. The singing is in French, so I can’t understand a word of it, but it’s a soothing rhythm that makes me smile. It puts me in a vacation sort of mood.

“What’s a ‘Bunni breakfast?’” I ask the waitress, who also happens to be one of the owners.

LA Times: Developers try to woo fickle hipsters

A nice mention of our favorite Coffee Shop in LA Times:

Portola Coffee is hot right now. The company has six locations in Orange County — almost all of them in alternative sites. The slogan is “their hands, our hands, your hands.”

It’s a sustainable thing. But if you’re a coffee snob, you will want to experience it. Chances are you will soon be driving 20 miles out of your way for a cup, thus erasing any environmental benefits.
