OC Register: Popular Corona del Mar beach concession Tackle Box opens pop-up restaurant at SOCO in Costa Mesa

When it comes to space, their other restaurant, the Tackle Box beach concession in Corona del Mar, definitely lived up to its name. But now brothers Brian and Andrew Huskey have room to move and groove at a second Tackle Box location at SoCo in Costa Mesa that’s just about 1,990 square feet.

Brian had one thing on the menu, then two and kept adding.”

OC Register: Taco Mario on the list of 12 best, unforgettable foods in 2017

It was just a tiny bite at the end of the meal, a demitasse half filled with sweet corn porridge flavored with coffee and Mexican chocolate, the spices and scents so familiar from childhood, reinforced with heavy cream to flood the palate. In an instant the warm atole, served with a pig-shaped gingerbread cookie –an homage to a panaderia treat–transported me back to San Antonio. When-o-when will Taco Maria start serving more substantial desserts? tacomaria.com –Anne Valdespino

When Mark Anderson created his farmers markets, he used his viewpoint as a tomato farmer in Ventura County. He wanted to create a place to benefit local growers and engage patrons. In 2010, the Costa Mesa market was started to add to the chic, hipster landscape at SOCO. The market, which operates from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, is one of six managed by Anderson in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

Anderson wanted to create a community hub.

OC Register: These are the 20 best full-service Mexican restaurants in Orange County

Here’s something I think we can all agree on: Orange County has better Mexican food than anywhere else in California. And I firmly believe we have in Taco Maria the single best Mexican restaurant in the United States, and the chef who tilts the scales heavily in our favor. But we also have some of the best old-fashioned, family-operated California-style Mexican restaurants in the state.

OC Register: Best Thing I Ate This Week: Restaurant Marin fries!

restaurant-marin-french-fries-oc-register

When I reviewed Restaurant Marin in May, one of the things I liked most about this all-day gourmet diner was its no-tipping policy. But shortly after that review, it surrendered that idea and switched to the more familiar pricing strategy, which means lower prices for everything (even though it’s actually a wash if you’re a decent tipper).

And they’ve also just revamped the menu, adding all sorts of new items, including chili cheese fries.
